Si chiama Pinta she is an Australian shepherd and was already famous on YouTube as the protagonist of the channel Qua la Zampaof Irene Sofia blogger and dog trainer. But this dog has something more. In fact, it is the first dog in the world to be registered in Blockchain.
The idea comes from Irene Sofia and her husband Marco Crotta - among Italy's foremost experts in the Blockchain field - who thought of using and experimenting with the endless possibilities of this technology starting on their dog.
Thus began the project FaunaLife , the first initiative that aims to establish an independent international animal registry based on Blockchain. The first registry whose data remain unalterable over time, have a certain date and an owner/author identifiable by digital signature. The data are in fact "permissionless" allow you to make available, but not public, the entire history of each inserted element. From origins to future developments. This feature is the best guarantee that what is entered in the verified transactions corresponds exactly to the veracity of the data.
The benefits of applying blockchain are enormous:
unifies the dog registry nationally and internationally;
facilitates the movement of animals during travel and encourages adoptions between different regions and countries;
hinders the trafficking of puppies from Puppy Farms and counteracts the phenomenon of pet trade;
provides the family tree of the animals you have information about, not only for the purebred ones (e.g., now it is very difficult to find the siblings of a litter and know, for example, if they had similar diseases);
binds to the microchip all the information of the pedigree;
allows you to attach health, insurance, work information such as awards and patents;
offers the possibility of doing studies on the transmissibility of inherited genetic diseases with accuracy and on a very large sample.
The project was created to manage the dog registry but it is not limited to dogs and can be applied to any animal identifiable by microchip or other identification system.
For example, it is also possible to start right away with the feline registry, to combat straying and catalog and study feline colonies, or apply it to horse registries.
The benefits of Blockchain in the Pet field are also considerable. It is a simple, effective and inexpensive technology. Moreover, it allows all the information hitherto present to be networked. Indeed, owners of dogs and cats can enter data, but at the same time also volunteers from kennels and catteries, as well as veterinarians and breeders.
Blockchain projects are now increasingly welcomed at the institutional level as well, so much so that the Ministry of Economic Development has established a commission to define the national strategy for the use of this technology.
Blockchain can effectively and radically contribute to animal welfare.
